Extraction

Tooth extraction is the safe removal of a tooth. Often referred to as "pulling a tooth" or "getting a tooth out," this routine procedure is performed at our office with care and expertise, ensuring your comfort every step of the way. In some cases, such as wisdom tooth extractions or more complex situations, we may collaborate with an oral surgeon to provide the best care for your needs.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars located at the back of the mouth, both on the top and bottom. However, they often cause dental issues, making their removal a common recommendation by oral surgeons.

One primary reason for wisdom teeth extraction is to prevent complications with surrounding teeth. When wisdom teeth only partially emerge through the gums, they can be difficult to clean properly, leading to plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay.

Another key reason to remove wisdom teeth is improper alignment. When wisdom teeth fail to erupt straight, they can cause crowding or misalignment of the other teeth, leading to further dental complications.

Reasons for Extraction

There are a few reasons someone may need to get a tooth extracted:

  • Advanced Gum Disease (Periodontitis): Severe gum disease can weaken the bone and tissues supporting your teeth, necessitating extraction.
  • Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment: Removing a tooth may be necessary to create space for braces or aligners.
  • Crowding or Damage to Nearby Teeth: When teeth are too close together or pressing against others, extraction can help prevent further issues.
  • Impacted Teeth: Teeth that cannot fully emerge through the gums, such as wisdom teeth, may require removal.
  • Broken Teeth Beyond Repair: If a tooth is severely fractured and cannot be restored, extraction might be the best option.
  • Extensive Tooth Decay: When decay has severely damaged a tooth and restoration isn't feasible, extraction ensures oral health.

Our goal is to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible while preserving your overall dental health! Contact Union Smiles to learn more or to schedule a consultation.
